Giving Back this Holiday Season
There are so many things to love about Christmas--She & Him's Christmas album, constant viewings Love Actually and gorging on super tasty food without a care. But in the midst of indulging and gift getting, it's important that we give back to our communities and help individuals who are not as fortunate as we are. Whether it's volunteering at a food bank or community kitchen, or it's donating to an organization or charity whose work you admire, there are so many ways you can bring joy to others this Christmas season.
And so, with only 7 more sleeps till Christmas (!!) we're sharing a few different organizations and causes that you can donate to this holiday season!
Nature Conservancy is a non-profit organization and Canada's leading national conservation organization. They've been protecting ecological lands in Canada since the 1960s and could always use some help in advancing their work. You can make a one time donation or set up monthly donations here.
Inside Education provides resources and tools for teachers and students and help people get a better understanding of science, technology, and the environment. Their work is really important in the journey to creating a better future for our planet. Donate here. **
The Cerebral Palsy Association in Alberta supports and enriches the lives of individuals affected by cerebral palsy and other disabilities in the province. The Association also focuses on bringing awareness to the issues surrounding people living with disabilities in our communities. Donate here
Edmonton and Area Land Trust
The Edmonton and Area Land Trust works to protect natural areas in Edmonton for the benefit of wildlife and people, as well as to conserve biodiversity. There are a few ways to donate to the EALT, including sponsoring a species of your choice!
Sustainable Food Edmonton provides tools and resources to strengthen communities' relationships with their food and their planet through urban agriculture. Donate here to help build and maintain more community gardens.
Help Survivors of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico
The people of Puerto Rico are still suffering in the aftermath of devastating Hurricane Maria that destroyed their homes early in September. There are still people living without access to water and electricity. Consider donating to the Hispanic Federation's Unidos or the Mayor of San Juan's Foundation, Somebody Help Us/Alguien Ayúdenos to help with rebuilding efforts.
**The Alberta Council for Environmental Education is another great organization to consider donating to that works with teachers, students and parents to strengthen environmental literacy in Alberta.
